Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate located on a 2000 foot peak in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation about 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original boutique California Winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Mount Eden Vineyard has been continuously producing estate bottled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay longer than anyone else in California. Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, the low-yielding vineyards have consistently produced world class wines for over 50 years.
Winemaker and Proprietor Jeffrey Patterson has been making wine at Mount Eden since 1981. His low yielding hillside vineyards are sustainable and dry farmed. Fermentation is done with native yeasts and fining and filtering is minimal if at all. The winery is completely solar powered.
Burghound, 93: An elegant, pure and complex nose speaks of spice and floral nuances on the fresh red berry fruit aromas that precede highly seductive and delicious yet entirely serious medium-bodied flavors that culminate in an impressively persistent finish... Terrific.
Mount Eden 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate
Josh Raynolds, 93 points: Bright ruby. Seductive aromas of red- and blackcurrant, singed plum, mocha and minerals, with a smoky overtone. Sappy and smooth in the mouth, with a compelling sweetness to its layered dark berry and cherry flavors. Deep but very energetic...
Mount Eden 2007 Chardonnay Estate
Parker, 96 points: Notes of white currants, lemon butter, poached pear, as well as touches of honey and crushed rock are all present in the complex aromatics of the light greenish/gold-colored 2007 Chardonnay Estate. A beautiful, full-bodied, textured mouthfeel with great freshness and brilliant purity is evidence of another stunner from this iconic source of high-elevation California Chardonnay. This is probably my favorite vintage over the last decade and has at least 10 years of aging potential.
Wine Enthusiast, 89 points: A good exemplar of Cabernet grown
in this important winegrowing region south of San Francisco. It's a
perfect wine to drink now for its dryness, tannic balance and classic
blackberry, black currant and raisin flavors.
Mount Eden 2009 Chardonnay Wolff Vineyards
Josh Raynolds, 91 points: Pale yellow. Musky, powerfully scented aromas of orchard fruits, smoky
lees, truffle...Weighty
and round but sharply focused, offering fresh pear, peach, tangerine and
buttered toast flavors....Lots going on here, especially for the price.
