Opus One is a joint venture based in the Oakville town of Napa Valley between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The two agree on the Latin name "Opus" for it ease of recognition in both French and English. In 1984 they simultaneously unveiled the first vintages 1979 and 1980 after years of much anticipation. Winemaking responsibilities are shared between Patrick Leon of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and Timothy Mondavi. The blend is always dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon while the percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot vary depending on the respective vintage.
