Ludovico Antinori decided to produce wines with Bordeaux varietals after witnessing the success his brother, Piero, had at his Tenuta San Guido estate with Sassicaia. The first vintage of Ornellaia was 1985. The property consists of over 70 hectares dedicated to the cultivation Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Verdot vines. A separate 8 hectare of Merlot vines is home the perhaps the greatest Italian Merlot, 'Masseto.'
