The Conterno family have been producing wine in Piedmont since the beginning of the 20th century. At first they purchased grapes and bottled wine for their enoteca in the small village of San Giuseppe. Son Giacomo eventually took over the leadership in 1934, but it wasn't until he passed control to his sons Giovanni and Aldo that the estate recieved world-wide fame. The two brothers were split over the style of Barolo they wanted to make, so in 1969 they split the estate in half. Giacomo was the tradtionalist of the two, favoring long macertation and lengthy cask-ageing. Up until 1974 all of the grapes were purchased, but that same year Giovanni purchased 16 hectares of vineyards in Cascina Francia.
