In 2004, Piero Incisa della Rocchetta purchased the first of the land now known as Bodega Chacra. The property had an existing, though abandoned, vineyard, originally planted in 1932. Piero, hailing from the renowned winemaking family responsible for the creation and success of Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia), was called to the southern hemisphere with a goal to produce world-class Pinot Noir from uncharted and untested territory.  This singular vineyard at Bodega Chacra is of thick, pure, gnarled Pinot Noir vines. They produce tiny bunches of small, concentrated berries which are harvested by hand. No automated mechanization is used at any stage of the production process.

Bodega Chacra is located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, 620 miles south of Buenos Aires, equidistantly between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The region possesses a dry and arid climate, naturally protected by the surrounding desert. The air is pristine and without pollution, enjoying tremendous luminosity and pure sunlight. The seasons are precisely defined, with hot summers, cold winters and mild springs and autumns. This climatic consistency translates into consistency from vintage to vintage.  

More about Piero Incisa

The grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the creator and proprietor of Sassicaia and one of the most renowned Italian wineries, and nephew of Nicolo’ Incisa della Rocchetta, who currently manages the family’s winemaking enterprises, Piero spent his childhood on the family estate in the Maremma district of Tuscany, privy to the exclusive centuries-old winemaking and vineyard management traditions to which he now claims as his own expertise.

Upon completing his undergraduate studies at the prestigious Florimont School in Switzerland, he worked briefly as an account associate at UBS in Geneva before setting out to realize his lifelong dream of being a winemaker.  In 1999, he moved to California to pursue a degree in Economics at Pepperdine University, then returned to Italy where he managed the day-to-day operations of two family wine estates in Umbria—Titignano and Salviano—which are owned by his mother, Nerina Corsini Incisa della Rocchetta. Shortly afterwards, in January of 2000, he returned to the United States to pursue a Masters from New York University which he completed in June of 2003. He founded Bodega Chacra in 2004.
