Richard Betts: back with three new, amazing wines.
The New York Vintners was just paid a visit by Richard Betts, a Master Sommelier, a Wine Director of Little Nell, and a co-founder of Betts & Scholls Winery. Many NY Vintners’ clients will remember the CC Cabernet Label from Richard. He sold that operation in 2009 and has since been concentrating on his Mezcal project and has created three wines and two new fine wine labels that we present to you today. "Saint Glinglin" from Bordeaux and "My ESSENTIAL red" from California.
Saint Glinglin is somewhat of a tongue-and-cheek reference. Glinglin is the french equivalent of our "when pigs fly" sentiment, used to talk about a very unlikely event. Saint Glinglin, as a name for the wine, acknowledges that the idea of launching a new Bordeaux wine of high quality at an affordable price is the kind of thing that can only happen "when pigs fly". But not so, because he has done it. The release comes with two labels: Carte Verte and Grand Cru.
The Cote Cote de Franc (Carte Verte) is mainly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet sourced from an area just East of Saint Emilion. This is a mineral driven wine which reflects the same soil composition as Saint Emilion. Complemented with proper aging of 18 months spent in barrel the Carte Verte is only seconded by St. Glinglin’s Grand Cru release. The Grand Cru is “a high-toned wine with grace” that will find it’s way to my own personal selected cellar. If you’re a former lover of Bordeaux or someone ready to explore: this is it.

My Essential Red is Richard’s new California project and is one example of a wine that he feels is simultaneously delicious and accessible. He firmly believes that “wine is a grocery, not a luxury,” and produces this wine to traverse that middle ground between Screaming Eagle and 2-Buck Chuck. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a large amount of Cab Franc to enhance the fresh flavors without bogging down the ease of the wine.

In an interview with me this past week, Richard mentioned that a part of his passion for producing wine comes from his youth, and his idea that a table was never completely set without a bottle of wine. At New York Vintners we can't agree more and we invite you to take advantage of some of these great values. Order some now and set your table!
