Cataluña spands from southern France down the Mediterranean well passed the industrial and cultural city of Barcelona. The region has historically produced large amounts of wine, for a long time in the form of Cava, the Champagne inspired sparkling wine produced from indigenous grapes like Macabeo and Parellada. Within the last quarter century Cataluña has emerged as a powerful red wine region. There are nine DOs: Alella, Emporada-Costa Brava, Conca de Barbera, Costers del Segre, Montsant, Penedes, Plade Bages, Priorat, Tarragona, and Terra Alta (as well as DO Cataluna). Garnacha, Tempranillo, Macabeo, Xarel-lo are the principle indigenous grapes which are increasingly sharing vineyard space with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Chardonnay.
