Southern Burgundy's Beaujolais region produces large quantities of wine which for many years were know as light, quaffable fruity wines. Within the last few years, there has been a drive to produce more concentrated "Burgundian" styled wines capable of withstanding a few more years in bottle. Most of the red wine comes from the Gamay grape. Fruity, juicy, and crisp, Beaujolais are often perfect warm-weather reds. There exist 10 crus, or communes, with which the Gamay grapes achieves some sort of distinction: St.-Amour, Julienas, Chenas, Moulin-a-Vent, Fluerie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Regnie, Brouilly, and Cote de Brouilly.
