Roussillon

Roussillon, although located in France has a history rich with Spanish influence.  With most of its inhabitants of Catalan decent, the region's wine styles and techniques, as well as its grape varieties, have much in common with its neighbor, Spain.  Roussillon's climate and geography is quite ideal for grape growing, however, due to a lag in technology and materials used, the region had been slow on the development of quality wine.  Today, with temperature controlled cellars and new oak for aging, Roussillon is now home to some of France's most exciting reds and whites. Carignan, Syrah, Maccabeu, Mouvedre, Cinsault and Grenache Noir and Blanc are major varietals of the region grown successfully in the AOCs of Banyuls and Collioure, and Cotes du Rousillon.
